Peel an apple and carve out small eyes, a nose, ears, and a mouth into one side of the apple.  Let the apple sit in a sunny, dry spot for 2-3 weeks.  When it’s dry and very withered, stick a wooden dowel in one end, halfway into the apple.  Cut a piece of fabric or felt as long as the dowel and about 4-5 inches wide.  Tie it around the top of the dowel, under the apple head, with a piece of string or yarn so that the fabric or felt opening is in the back.  Cut another shorter piece of fabric or felt, and with another piece of string or yarn, tie it around the top of the dowel for a cape, with its opening in the front.  If you like, you can glue the fabric together in the back and stuff the apple person with wool roving or fleece.  Glue some white or gray wool roving onto the apple head for hair.  You can stand your apple granny or gramps in a potted plant or lean it against a window for an autumn decoration.  It also makes a fun doll to play with!

To speed the drying process up grab a jar and baking soda and/or salt. Cover the apple with baking soda and allow to sit overnight. Toss out the baking soda and dust the baking soda from the apple. Add new baking soda. Repeat daily for 4-5 days. Add cinnamon to the baking soda to give the apple a nice smell.

At the end of autumn remove the apple from the dowel rod  and store in a sealed jar with baking soda. This will remove any moisture that the apple reabsorbed.
